Tuesday Trivia: the Catholic Church discovered....

Both the big bang theory and genetics....
Sometimes you just get excited about stuff you just found and you want to share it with people - consider this one of those moments.

I knew about Mendel (the "father" of modern genetics - an Augustinian priest/monk) but Georges Lemaitre and the Big Bang too??? The predominant theories of both genetics (consequently evolution as we know it) AND the creation of the entire universe were drawn up by catholic priests!!! Go figure!

So, basically, what is the deal with all this intelligent design stuff? I mean it's not isolated to you Americans anymore either, recently in our provincial elections - the conservative leader, John Tory, did in fact make a brief mention about introducing 'intelligent design' curriculum into Ontario (not like he won, but still).

It's a really shitty circumstance that we are in nowadays - where everything is about 'expert' this and 'expert' that, I mean whatever happened to the "love of learning"? We are so quick to divide education into little compartments and that freaks me out. Everyday, everything becomes 'professionalized' and that's a scary thought - because when you 'professionalize' yet another subject, you take away from the overlapping layers of all types of knowledge, things that often can facilitate holistic learning. It's just sad.

Anyways....

Book Tagging - or a history of linkages over the past 4 days.

Yolanda just tagged me! I've never been tagged before but this is truly fascinating because I've been trying to follow the trail of tags and it's interesting that over the course of just four days, there's probably been at least 20 different tags, and so many good books I would love to get my hands on!

It's like a 'leftist looney circle' really.... ;)

The instructions:
Find the nearest book.
Turn to page 123.
Go to the fifth sentence on the page.
Copy out the next three sentences and post to your blog.
Name the book and the author, and tag three more folks.

So, I'm cheating a little Yolanda, because the first two books on my desk were "Animal Farm" and the "Communist Manifesto" neither of which are even 90 pages long! Turning to page 123 would be a little difficult.

I'm going with a third book, the one I'm currently reading:

"The cook went back to the post office. 'You are getting the letters wet. Taking no care.'"
- The Inheritance of Loss, by Kiran Desai

And these are the people I am tagging:

Mandos, Sparkle, Ministry of Love and Simply Wondered, I chose four in case someone doesn't want to be tagged!
