Must Read: A Question of APIA Feminism: Domestic Abuse/Intimate Partner Violence

I don't have much to argue with in Jenn's post, A Question of APIA Feminism: Domestic Abuse/Intimate Partner Violence, because I've read the same studies. But I would add that from the studies I've read, the main solution to decreasing the high incidence of intimate partner violence in the APIA community is awareness, or something I talk about frequently, visible APIA feminisms. Meaning the high incidence is due to 1) women not getting the help they need and 2) the lack of discussion about intimate partner violence in the APIA community, and, 1) and 2) go hand in hand. The lack of awareness added to 3) the insensitivity of domestic violence shelters towards Asian languages and cultures and 4) immigrants' ignorance about the U.S. legal system create a crisis.

Here are the (many) highlights of Jenn's post:
Existing studies of domestic abuse have historically neglected to collect racial or ethnic data on victims of domestic violence. In those studies that do collect racial or ethnic data, studies that have focused on Asian American women have varied widely in the reported frequency of domestic violence (summarized in this factsheet from the Asian and Pacific Islander Institute on Domestic Abuse), suggesting that Asian American women might underreport domestic abuse or be less educated on recognizing the warning signs. Regardless, even these rough estimates are alarming: anywhere between 20-80% of APIA women report experiencing some form of domestic abuse or violence. At least one study (conducted by the U.S. Department of Justice) estimates that roughly 52% of Asian American women are victims of rape and/or physical assault (Exhibit 4), but notes that this only represents the incidence of reporting.

Within the Asian American community, studies suggest that reporting of domestic abuse varies along ethnic lines, as well as according to age and generational status. 61% of immigrant Japanese women, for example, reported some form of intimate partner violence, while a different study found 20% of Filipina women reported experiencing some form of domestic violence. A third study reported that 8% of Chinese women experienced “severe physical violence”, but that percentage doubled with “more acculturated” women (although this may represent a higher likelihood of reporting).

One of the most comprehensive studies conducted on domestic violence within the Asian American community was authored by the Asian/Pacific Islander Domestic Violence Resource Project. Project AWARE (Asian Women Advocating Respect and Empowerment) surveyed nearly 200 Asian women in the D.C. area. That study noted that roughly two-thirds of surveyed women at least “occasionally” experienced some form of controlling behaviour or psychological abuse from their intimate partners in the year prior to the study; Project AWARE displays the forms of abuse that were surveyed in the full report.

Several studies (e.g. Understanding Violence Against Women by Cromwell and Burgess) have suggested that the problem of domestic abuse or intimate partner violence within the Asian American community may stem from unique cultural influences that affect a woman’s likelihood to recognize or report abuse by her partner.

Primarily, traditional Confucian principles of familial hierarchy have been traditionally used to define gender roles wherein husbands are superior to wives and sons superior to daughters; this hierarchy is reinforced by a social expectation of obedience and piety, and results in both men and women being socialized into accepting a superior/inferior relationship between intimate partners that can leave women susceptible to intimate partner violence. Indeed, an abusive relationship may be so normalized for a woman that APIA women by not recognize abuse as it occurs. Moreoever, our tacit acceptance of hierarchal intimate partner relationships may unintentionally reward patterns of domestic violence; in “Unheard Voices”, a study on APIA domestic violence, one survey participant said:
“I think its our cultures that allow it to happen. We do not hold somebody accountable for that kind of violence…you see that the batterer gets invited to parties, it’s the woman who gets isolated…”
Secondly, several Asian cultures have emphasized the importance of familial or social harmony, as well as to preserve social “face” over personal interests. Dasgupta and Warrier (1996) reported that within the South Asian community, the predominant motivation for wives were a belief in the rold of a “good wife”, described as including “sacrifice of personal freedom and autonomy… they felt responsible for the reputation of their families in India, were eager not to compromise their families’ honor with a divorce, and operated under the added pressure of preserving traditions and presenting an “unblemished” image of the community to the U.S. mainstream.”

The invisibility of Asian American women in the struggle to end intimate partner violence rests also in the Model Minority Myth, which has long discouraged mainstream America from imagining that the Asian American community might suffer from concerns such as mental disease or domestic violence. This reluctance to perceive the APIA community as flawed not only jeopardizes the idealistic image of the American immigrant, but may also be perpetuated within the community by APIA men and women who are unwilling to “air out our dirty laundry” in the eyes of mainstream America. As Dasgupta and Warrier reported in their 1996 study, men and women of Asian communities may feel a pressure to maintain “face” for their cultural traditions, heritages, or race in America, and as such may perceive a woman reporting intimate partner violence or domestic abuse as an affront upon that image.

The question foremost on my mind is why the Asian American community at-large isn’t angry about domestic abuse/intimate partner violence within our community? APIA feminists must maintain the focus of the debate on the unheard victims of domestic abuse and intimate partner violence. The unique sexism that APIA feminists must combat is the reluctance, both within and outside the APIA community, to address or even understand the concerns of Asian American female victims of physical and psychological assault. The implicit message being sent by our apathy is that abuse against APIA women is acceptable, so long as it is unheard or willfully misunderstood.

Link Love: Asian American Feminism

I'm deeply stunned and saddened at the assassination of Benazir Bhutto, one of my Asian feminist heroes, and am rendered speechless. Except to say it's George Bush's and his various puppet governments' fault.

Filipina poet Barbara Jane Reyes muses on a theme I've written about lately. That APIA women are their own worst enemy.

Reappropriate: Helen Zia: Be The Change. Zia, a Baby Boomer, was affected by Asian/Confucian sexism (father), I'm a Gen Xer affected by Asian/Confucian sexism (mother), the commenter who I'm assuming is a Gen Yer was affected by both Asian/Confucian and Western sexism (father) and Jenn is a Gen Yer affected by Asian/Confucian sexism (father) and so Zia was right when she said at last year's NAPAWF conference APIAs should get rid of their Confucian thinking.

Happy Winter Solstice

**Cross-posted at my place.**

It was fun blogging here.

Early on, Pizzadiavola expressed interest in intersectionality and Asian Americans. If you're a woman of color interested in intersectionality and communities of color, I just tagged 40 posts about this on my blog under intersectionality. Most feminists know about intersectionality in feminism, i.e., racism and classism in feminism, but few know about sexism in communities of color. My blog is probably one of the only places on the 'net to find commentary on this right now. I'm also proud of my women of color, violence against women, feminism and sexism tags so I hope people will check out my blog.

Happy Winter Solstice and Holidays!

Be good.

Don't tase me, bro!

**Cross-posted at my place.**

Via Bint Alshamsa:

"Don't tase me, bro" was named most memorable quote of the year in the Yale Book of Quotations.

Second was Lauren Upton, Miss Teen USA contestant's quote, "I personally believe that U.S. Americans are unable to do so because some people out there in our nation don't have maps and I believe that our education like such as in South Africa and Iraq and everywhere like such as and I believe that they should our education over here in the U.S. should help the U.S. or should help South Africa and should help Iraq and the Asian countries so we will be able to build up our future for us."
"These new media are spreading these things," said editor Fred R. Shapiro, 53, associate librarian and lecturer in legal research at the Yale Law School. "I'm not listing the most admirable quotes, the most eloquent quotes. It's the most memorable quotes."

How's everyone doing?

**Cross-posted at my place.**

snowflakes2.png

It's a week before Christmas and well into the holiday season.

I'm a little blue and burned out. A couple days ago, my brother, sil and I painted his living room because my other brother and his family are coming. At first, I wasn't crazy about the pea green shade but it worked out great. Yesterday, we went to Target for a candle holder and red candles for the mantle and it looks nice. In my twenties, I hated being with my family during the holidays (wait, that was last year) but now I feel lucky to be around some cool people.

Good news and bad news

**Cross-posted at my place.**

Last week, the U.S. Sentencing Commission voted unanimously, 7-0, to retroactively lighten sentences for crimes related to crack cocaine. 19,500 prisoners could be free within months. There has been a stark disparity between sentencing for crack and powder cocaine for two decades. 85% of federal inmates for crimes related to crack cocaine are black.

The Jena Six case just took an evil turn. Carmen of All About Race received an email that said D.A. Reed will make Mychal Bell prosecution star witness. He will testify against the five others, four of whom will be tried as adults, and this could mean jail time for the other five.
Think what you will of LaSalle Parish District Attorney Reed Walters, he has done a masterful job of pitting Jena 6 defendants against one another and the result will probably mean jail time for each Black teenager.

Of the six Black teens accused of beating Justin Barker, a White schoolmate last year in Jena, La., only Mychal Bell is known to have had a criminal record, which included two battery incidents and two charges of criminal damage to property. By first focusing on Bell, the D.A. has been able to portray Jena 6 as hardened criminals and, equally important, force Bell into a compromising position. Recently, Bell struck a deal with the D.A. that includes testifying against his five co-defendants, if needed. Op-Ed: A Split Among The Jena 6, George Curry - BlackPressUSA -Reclaim our Civil Rights

The fact Reed hasn't been Nifonged yet is astounding.

Democrats should grow up

**Cross-posted at my place.**

Bill Clinton's recent remarks weren't as nasty as people made them out to be. It seems he was promoting his wife's strong points more than dissing anyone:
Later he said that his friends in the Republican party had indicated that they felt his wife would be the strongest candidate, partly because she had already been "vetted" -- another subtle slap at Obama.

She's vetted.
Also: He said the most important thing to judge was who would be "the best agent for change" not merely a "symbol for change....symbol is not as important as substance."

She's been an agent of change especially on the identity politics front.
He also hit back at the charge that experienced politicians had helped get us into the Iraq war, saying that this was "like saying that because 100 percent of the malpractice cases are committed by doctors, the next time I need surgery I'll get a chef or a plumber to do it."

Who voted against the War? Russ Feingold.
When Rose said that all this seemed to add up to Clinton hinting that people would be "rolling the dice" if they picked Obama, the former president replied: "It's less predictable, isn't it?"

Obama should fire his advisers. He's better off advising himself and even better if his wife advised him. Speaking of which, this election would be much more interesting if it was between Hillary, Michelle and Elizabeth. They'd get right down to business and come to a consensus within an hour on what's best for the country.

Obama's remark was nastier:
Sen. Barack Obama was asked how he would shift U.S. foreign policy in a different direction, given that several of his advisers once worked for President Bill Clinton. "I want to hear that," Sen. Hillary Clinton chimed in, provoking laughter. Obama waited a moment, and then quipped: "Well, Hillary, I'm looking forward to you advising me as well."

Edwards is the most progressive but Clinton and Obama are the frontrunners. Democrats should stop attacking each other and talk progressive ideals like Kucinich and Gravel. What do you think?

Intro to guest blogger

**Cross-posted at my place.**

Hi, I'm donna darko and will be guest-blogging this week. I'm 39, second generation Chinese American and live in the Midwest. Currently, I'm a grad student in sociology. When I finish my thesis, I plan to get back on the ground to get Democrats in the area elected in '08 through DFA. It will be good to mix it up again because I'm burned out.

My personal endgame is Asian and Asian American feminism because that's what I know and what influenced me most in life. 60% of the world's women are Asian so I know there must be others in the world with similar experiences.

Last time I was on the ground I worked for ACORN out of a broom closet in the basement of the AFL-CIO building and was instrumental to raising the minimum wage in Florida. I know this because the director of the entire campaign thanked me personally. Secretly, I think it's because I was one of the only people who didn't smoke weed on the job. It became the second red state to have a minimum wage above the national wage and this paved the way for the 2007 national minimum wage raise.

I'm sure my friend/then-boss is somewhere winning another campaign. She was kind of unusual because, at 32, she already dedicated her life to political activism with its lack of health insurance, living wages and regular lifestyle.

My real name is Alicia. Pleased to meetcha.

No, way - there ain't no such thing as "Pornstitution" - now on your nightly news.

Yeah, cause you know the porn industry coupled with mainstream media, is not an 'institution' especially because 'one group' of feminists "invented it" and another didn't, so how DARE it be part of the "feminist" lexicon....blahdee blahdee bloody blah.

I'm sorry, isn't like 80% of the world's media owned by 4 companies?

Fox News Porn: Too Hot for the Internet?
By Robert Greenwald, Brave New Films. Posted November 16, 2007.

Trigger warning.
(note: I'm not entirely up with the whole idea of re-using the material on fox to 'create' a whole new site about 'fox news porn', but I am not sure how else to do it without showing that "yes, this is what 'passes for news' and 'journalism'". I also have to wonder how much money Fox gets from pornographers on an annual basis).

No, what got the attack dogs at Fox hungry and looking for flesh was none other than an exposé of their smut peddling! It makes sense in a way, because advertisers tend not to like their products being promoted between segments of soft porn. And a large part of their conservative base hates this as well, which might be why one Christian organization compared the way women were dressed on Fox to the manner in which "hookers" are attired.

So what did we do?

With the Fox News Hounds' help, we found enough Fox lasciviousness for a whole porn site!!

Really, we did. And it wasn't that hard to do. In fact, if you thought Fox Attacks: Decency was a glimpse into the lustful thoughts of your favorite Fox anchor, you ain't seen nothing yet.

Satire and parody aside, we think this is extremely objectionable, misogynistic content. We still don't understand how Fox is allowed to call this "news." So let's make this campaign count and hit Fox where it hurts -- their fair and balanced sheet.

Prostitution: Where Raciscm and Sexism Intersect

Prostitution: Where Raciscm and Sexism Intersect
Prostitution: Where Racism and Sexism Intersect*
by Vednita Nelson
Michigan Journal of Gender & Law, 1993, Volume 1: 81-89.

Eleven Black women were strangled. Eleven Black women were sexually mutilated. The bodies of eleven Black women were dumped in abandoned buildings under piles of trash in a period of nine months

I had to ask myself. Where was the outrage? Why wasn't the community up in arms? Clearly there was a pattern here. All of the women were poor. All of the women were Black. All of the women were used in prostitution. There was no reason to believe that the killer would not strike again. So, I had to ask myself, where was the outrage? One Black male is beaten up by four white police officers and every Black community activist in the country, including the Reverend Jesse Jackson, is crying out against racist violence and the culture of poverty that precipitated the L.A. riots.(6) Eleven poor, Black women are murdered and mutilated, their bodies are thrown away like so much trash, and the only thing we hear, besides the deafening silence, is a local Baptist minister mourning that these women "were already among the walking dead."(7) Where do racism and sexism meet? If you ask me, they meet in a trash pile, in an abandoned building, in Detroit.

Racism makes Black women and girls especially vulnerable to sexual exploitation and keeps them trapped in the sex industry. It does this by limiting educational and career opportunities for African-Americans in this country.(8) It does this through a welfare system that has divided the poor Black family. If a mother works, or her children's father contributes to their support, her check and food stamps are cut by that amount.(9) Thus, poor Black women are left alone to find for themselves and their children on inadequate Aid to Families with Children(10) grants.

Racist stereotypes in the mainstream media and in pornography, portray Black women as wild animals who are ready for any kind of sex, any time, with anybody.(11) Additionally, strip joints and massage parlors are typically zoned in Black neighborhoods,(12) which gives the message to white men that it is alright to solicit Black women and girls for sex--that we are all prostitutes. On almost any night, you can see them slowly cruising around our neighborhoods, rolling down their windows, calling out to women and girls. And we got the message growing up, just like our daughters are getting it today, that this is how it is, this is who we are, this is what we are for.(13)

.....

How can mainstream feminists claim to care about Black women and racism when they fail to speak out against the white men who pay for the right to sexually abuse our daughters and sisters, or against the police who target these same women for arrest and imprisonment, while their abusers, the johns that prey on our community, go free? It is time for white feminists to stand beside US, to fight racist and sexist oppression, and to take the same risks we do. The mainstream feminist community must actively fight to end both systems. If not, the cry "sisterhood is powerful" will remain an empty slogan for Black women.

Tuesday Trivia: the Catholic Church discovered....

Both the big bang theory and genetics....
Sometimes you just get excited about stuff you just found and you want to share it with people - consider this one of those moments.

I knew about Mendel (the "father" of modern genetics - an Augustinian priest/monk) but Georges Lemaitre and the Big Bang too??? The predominant theories of both genetics (consequently evolution as we know it) AND the creation of the entire universe were drawn up by catholic priests!!! Go figure!

So, basically, what is the deal with all this intelligent design stuff? I mean it's not isolated to you Americans anymore either, recently in our provincial elections - the conservative leader, John Tory, did in fact make a brief mention about introducing 'intelligent design' curriculum into Ontario (not like he won, but still).

It's a really shitty circumstance that we are in nowadays - where everything is about 'expert' this and 'expert' that, I mean whatever happened to the "love of learning"? We are so quick to divide education into little compartments and that freaks me out. Everyday, everything becomes 'professionalized' and that's a scary thought - because when you 'professionalize' yet another subject, you take away from the overlapping layers of all types of knowledge, things that often can facilitate holistic learning. It's just sad.

Anyways....

DNA pioneer's lecture cancelled after comments on race

Watson - of the Watson-Crick and the double helix band, is - wah, wah? Not surprisingly yet another ..... RACIST!

Shocked? I'm not - really. Before we jump to the conclusion that I'm anti-science - repeat after me: Race is a construct, it's fluid and there is no scientific proof of the existence of intellectual advantage favouring one 'group' of people over another. Racism masked as science - is still racism - and that's always devoid of fact.

The newspaper quoted the 79-year-old American geneticist as saying he was "inherently gloomy about the prospect of Africa" because "all our social policies are based on the fact that their intelligence is the same as ours — whereas all the testing says not really."

What does shock me though is that 99% of the world's population fails to see the connect between the current 'third-world' and past colonial expansion/exploitation.

How is it that people don't see - that the so-called 'equality-scale' - started off unbalanced in the first place? How do people not get this? How do people not see that when you steal/rape/exploit/murder/mutilate/severly destroy a society there is no hope in hell that they will ever be able to 'stand up' on their feet in the first place. (Putting aside that the development "MODEL" is flawed itself).

What do people not get about this?

Drop the Cosmo for the relationship advice - pick up a feminist book for your own benefit first!

Something we feminists always knew!
I'd write more - but I do have to say profeminist men in hetero-relationships are always far more happier in a relationship because as one guy told me "it allowed him to get rid of his macho facade and open up more".... :)

Feminism And Romance Go Hand In Hand
Science Daily — Contrary to popular opinion, feminism and romance are not incompatible and feminism may actually improve the quality of heterosexual relationships, according to Laurie Rudman and Julie Phelan, from Rutgers University in the US. Their study* also shows that unflattering feminist stereotypes, that tend to stigmatize feminists as unattractive and sexually unappealing, are unsupported.

It is generally perceived that feminism and romance are in direct conflict. Rudman and Phelan’s work challenges this perception. They carried out both a laboratory survey of 242 American undergraduates and an online survey including 289 older adults, more likely to have had longer relationships and greater life experience. They looked at men’s and women’s perception of their own feminism and its link to relationship health, measured by a combination of overall relationship quality, agreement about gender equality, relationship stability and sexual satisfaction.

They found that having a feminist partner was linked to healthier heterosexual relationships for women. Men with feminist partners also reported both more stable relationships and greater sexual satisfaction. According to these results, feminism does not predict poor romantic relationships, in fact quite the opposite.
The authors also tested the validity of feminist stereotypical beliefs amongst their two samples, based on the hypothesis that if feminist stereotypes are accurate, then feminist women should be more likely to report themselves as being single, lesbian, or sexually unattractive, compared with non-feminist women.

Rudman and Phelan found no support for this hypothesis amongst their study participants. In fact, feminist women were more likely to be in a heterosexual romantic relationship than non-feminist women. The authors conclude that feminist stereotypes appear to be inaccurate, and therefore their unfavorable implications for relationships are also likely to be unfounded.

Ms Manners: how not to extend an invitation: Feministe

Hi Donna, I'm a big fan of Leftist Looney Lunch and of your comments at
Feministe, and I was wondering if you might be interested in guest-blogging at
Feministe sometime this fall. I'd also like to invite AradhanaD and
bharatiyawadi, but I don't have their email addresses -- I'm not sure if they'd
be interested and I know at least AradhanaD has expressed some distaste for
Feministe before, but they're both really good and I'd like to at least extend
the offer if you think they might consider it. So could you forward the question
on to them as well, or ask them to email me?

- Someone at Feministe

My Response:

Also Someone as an addendum to the previous email that Donna will be forwarding you, don't you think that when you ask someone that you SUPPOSEDLY would like to guestblog that you would afford them some semblance of courtesy by taking the time to actually check their email in their profile and email them DIRECTLY?

Not that hard to do, but from your gesture it's obvious that your invitation was not sincere from the get-go. So, when you ask a WOC to guestblog on your site, you want to use another WOC as a go-between for an empty and hollow invitation that you don't really want to follow through on? you've got to be kidding me Someone, and you've really learned about white privilege haven't you?

Whatever,

-AD

PART TWO - IN WHICH I AM RIDICULOUS AND HYSTERICAL!

AD,
I'm sorry you feel that way, and I'm sorry that my actions came across so poorly. My invitation was sincere; if I didn't want you to guest-blog, I wouldn't have asked. I don't think that my emailing DonnaDarko was an indication of insincerity. I went to your site, clicked on "about" section, and didn't see an email contact. I clicked on bharatiyawwadi's profile and didn't see an email. I had Donna's email from one of her recent comments on Feministe, and so I figured I would just email her and ask her to pass it on. People ask me to pass things on to my co-bloggers all the time, so it didn't even occur to me that it would be insulting or an indication of "white privilege."
I'm sure you have perfectly good reasons for disliking me and I'm not particularly interested in getting into an email or blog war with you, but I think you're being ridiculous here. Now I see you've posted my email on your blog. My comment about you expressing your distaste for Feministe was a reaction to a comment you left on my post about prostitution a week or so ago (I'd link to it, but I'm on a connection that bars sites it deems "obscene," including parts of Feministe). It was simply my recognition that you've had problems with me/my blog in the past, and that despite that, I was still hoping you'd consider contributing. I'm sorry if that came off poorly. I figured it was better to address the issue head-on than to pretend that I had no idea how you felt.
All that said, I have a feeling you would have told me to fuck off no matter how I had phrased the email, and no matter who I had sent it to. And that's fine. If you ever change your mind or if you'd like to discuss this further, let me know.
-Someone

Someone,
you've got to be kidding me, can you please get over yourself.
1) You didn't email me personally, so yes, your email was hollow and indicative of your white privilege - while you expected Donna, a WOC, to do your work for you. You could have easily checked my profile where my email is available. Or you could have asked Donna for my email, but instead - you asked Donna to either pass on the message or ask me to email you! 2) I don't know you, and sorry I couldn't care less to bother about it. I don't like feministe as a blog - what don't you get about that? I think it's a hostile space for WOC women to post, as your audience is largely full of white men and liberal feminists. What is it about you white women that you think it's personal and about you all the time? It's systemic, and no offence no matter what you do with feministe - it's not my space. It's what in the 80s feminists would deem fairly liberal feminist. Again, that's not about you - it's about the space feminist, I don't know you - and don't care to. 3) Let me get this straight, the fact that you aren't taking responsibility for your RUDENESS, means I'm the one being RIDICULOUS? WHAT? So, to add insult to injury - I'm being RIDICULOUS. Hey as a WOC, it's not like I've never heard that before. In fact, us WOC are always ridiculous and hysterical. But you see now, you're going to be thinking "But AD, you are the unreasonable one here, I didn't do anything wrong. I asked your dumb-ass to guest blog on the holy grail of feminist websites and you were rude about it". And again, that's your white privilege talking my dear someone, where you a) don't accept responsibility for your rudeness and then b) blame it on the person who speaks out against you. But whatever, we're used to this.... white men and women do it to us all the time. Now what's going through your head "you are making this into a race-issue when it isn't". But then I'll say to you - it's a damn system somoene, and you not having the courtesy to DIRECTLY EMAIL ME is indicative of your privilege.
4) The last point is sheer rudeness, RACIST and RIDICULOUS. "All that said, I have a feeling you would have told me to fuck off no matter how I had phrased the email, and no matter who I had sent it to. And that's fine. If you ever change your mind or if you'd like to discuss this further, let me know."
Do you know me? Unless you claim to possess super-psychic abilities you do not know whether or not I would respond with sheer courteous elegance or with hostility if you asked me directly.
BUT, instead you CHOSE TO JUDGE ME without knowing anything about me or ever having engaged with me PERSONALLY. Engagement on your blog is different as it is on a particular subject. Why is this racist? Because you judged, you prejudged and that's systemic. It's a pattern of behaviour.
So to this I would say - $(&&((@&#(@&
BTW - your welcome for keeping your name on my blog anonymous - I'd be pretty embarassed if I was you.
This conversation is OVER!

General Strike 9/11/07!

From this website here.

A National Call to Action:
Tuesday, September
11th, 2007
No school.
No work. Buy nothing. Stay
home or hit the
streets.
No business as
usual.

Why strike? Why on 9/11?
September 11 is a day of mourning and reflection,
but it should also be a day of dissent and action.

Since the tragic
events of 9/11/01, America has fallen under a spell of fear and deception.
The
government peddles lies and steadily chips away at our democratic
rights.
Hundreds of thousands have been killed in the Iraq war—mostly
civilians.
Torture, surveillance, tyranny, empire. Many of us can recognize
the fascistic
direction of this government. But what do we do?

The
time has come to
let go of our fear—to stand up to lies and tyranny with
passion and urgency. To
connect with others and show our collective power.
It’s time to realize that
we’ve got nothing to lose. The time is now.

The General Strike is a
national call to action, from citizens to
other citizens. It is not about a
single issue. It is not an anti-war
protest, a civil rights protest, an election
fraud protest. It is not about
torture, surveillance, corporate media, the 9/11
coverup, or the
environment. This strike is about all these issues and more.

We all have
different concerns, but we all have the same concern: we are
being lied to
and this government does not represent us. Join other Americans in
demanding
truth, justice, and accountability.

This our country.
And
our
world.
We just have to stand up.

Bloggers battered by viral storm

via the BBC.... read more there (and no this isn't a booby trap link thing).

Google's Blogger site is being used by malicious hackers who are posting fake entries to some blogs.
The fake entries contain weblinks that lead to booby-trapped downloads that could infect a Windows PC.

Infected computers are being hijacked by the gang behind the attacks and either mined for saleable data or used for other attacks.

The Blogger attack is the latest in a series by a gang that has managed to hijack hundreds of thousands of PCs.

Attack pattern

Security researcher Alex Eckelberry from Sunbelt Software first noticed the booby-trapped links turning up on Blogger on 27 August.

Now many hundreds of blogs on the site have been updated with a short entry containing the link.

Mr Eckelberry said it was not yet clear how the links were posted to blogs. The bogus entries could have exploited a Blogger feature that lets users e-mail entries to their journal.

The blogs themselves could also be fake and set up solely to act as hosts for spam.

Indianoguy asks why aren't 'business leaders' - leaders?

Indianoguy asks a question here, and I thought it was interesting enough to DISCUSS in it's own thread.

Question:
I am just curious, whats wrong with entrepreneurs/industrialists being considered as leaders?

This is just my opinion, feel free to jump in, I used the example of an Indian movie called the Guru (I think we can largely ignore the movie - and just talk about the dynamics of business 'leaders' as a concept):

See with the Guru, it was all supposed to be how he got into power right? I.e. he's essentially a hero for making all this money. I know this sounds simplistic, but that's what it boils down to. We worship people for making money (as though that isn't something that happens because of accumulated/saved wealth), i.e. you have to start out with a bit of collatoral/capital already - so you aren't really 'poor-poor' when you become rich.

Essentially it's just another way of celebrity worship (i.e. infatuation with people who have achieved the status quo not necessarily by any great contribution to humanity unlike what I think formerly leaders were). But then again, I am a socialist.

The other thing about the Guru, is that, how are we supposed to worship someone as a hero when what he primarily did was make mock factories - he did smuggle merchandise, he often didn't pay his shareholders what he promised etc... if he paid them at all

I.e. he was essentially corrupt. But how is that different from the accumulation of capital in general? How do people accumulate it? ....it's not usually the nicest, and you do have to start off semi-educated/wellconnected/somewhat moneyed.

How did Guru come into money in the first place? He married a girl who was 'dishonourable' so her father gave him a dowry....

Does this make sense.

Now if you look at what traditionally we look for in a leader, we are seeking someone who has 'the best interests of everyone in mind' - this means socio-economically. The key and main difference between 'business leaders' and traditional leaders (and his comparison to Gandhi was just nauseating) is that business leaders really, truly only go in it for themselves - the welfare of their employees/the country etc... are usually by and large secondary aspects to them. That's why people like Steve Jobs at Apple doesn't care that his workers in China make his products at 65hours a week and get $10 a day. If he could get them done elsewhere for less - he would.

We're infatuated with 'business leaders' because of their accumulation of wealth, not because they necessarily give a crap about us.

People like Steve Jobs and the Guru, like to imagine themselves at the same level as 'leaders' in the traditional sense, and I ask you how much of that image is sold to us by them?

Being at the other end of the recieving end of corporate donations, I know that when you put a dumb-ass logo on your brochure saying "XYZ company" - that company probably donated WAYYYYYY less than an individual private donor. No, joke. But yet, they only give it to you if there's free publicity.

This man is not funny....

can't say much. I'm out of words. I don't like most people - is that okay sometimes?

Anyways, tell me again why a lot of 'progressives' like this man? Tell me again why? I don't think Russell Peters is funny, I think he's an arse and well - I think he's racist. Why do so-called progressive people think it's okay to laugh at what he says when they'd be appauled if it was someone else saying this kind of stuff? Oh yeah, I forgot - laughing at a brown man making racist jokes makes the jokes funny! Well, not funny - but you know, you don't have to feel guilty about laughing at something you'd be laughing at anyways, but can't due to 'political correctness' if it was a white person saying the same shit.

This is the thing about most comedy, you laugh at it cause it reifies and fortifies your 'common sense' understanding of the world. It makes you feel better, because it's not scary, it's not challenging - and hey someone up there just told you exactly what you already knew about blacks, women, asians, asian women, black women, the disabled and mentally challenged.... Why not pat yourself on the back and laugh?

Truly good comedy is about satire and pushing the status quo. Can for goodness sakes, most so-called brown 'progressive' people PLEASE STOP LAUGHING AT THIS MAN! He's not funny!!!!! Thank you.

The world's oldest customer

Interesting article, I've only cut and paste the conclusion, cause it's pretty long. You can read the rest here.

The world's oldest customer

By Yotam Feldman

In addition to her allegations against the police, Levenkron is also furious with the clients. "They all think that the victim of trafficking is some other woman," she says. "'My private Natasha,' they say, 'is happy to open her legs every evening in the escort service I visit. She is not a trafficking victim.' That is exactly the image that is cultivated in ads for sex services - she does kickboxing, she works in high-tech - that is what they have in their head. She enjoys all the clients."

Curator Ariella Azoulay suggests speaking about the clients more explicitly as rapists. "When we speak about the 'sex industry' and about 'clients,' it is impossible to recognize the rape that trafficked women testify time and again that they went through as part of the 'examination' of their quality as merchandise as rape. The notion that we need to enact additional legislation so that it will be possible to try the rapists - who in most cases are the traffickers of the bondswomen - is fundamentally mistaken. The problem is not the law; the law exists, and it prohibits rape. The problem is that women who are deprived of civil status cannot enjoy the protection of the law, certainly not when they are assaulted by Israeli men who possess a civil status."

What do you think of the use of the word "client" for men who go to prostitutes?

"With regard to trafficking of women, the term 'client' diverts our attention from the real point - the fact that this is the renewal of slavery. The women are not selling services and they do not have clients; these are women who were enslaved by coercion - and, one could say, by the light of day - to a master who keeps them as bondswomen. The term 'client' affords this whole business a facade of normality. At the same time, it is important to emphasize that the effort to divide attention between the prostitute and those who benefit from the enslavement of women like her is extraordinarily important. But we have to be careful not to forget that we are dealing in the first place with a social, legal and political structure that makes the phenomenon possible and preserves it. It is that structure which has to be attacked." W

some music....

I haven't posted in a while, nor have I had a chance to just post some tunes.... plus, I think Donna misses me ;)

So here are some tunes. The first is Broken social scene, with a song that is really awesome - and a video that I just discovered 5 minutes ago which is even better.

I really, really, really love the videos that Broken Social Scene puts out - such as fire eyed boy, I'm still your fag and cause = time (all available on youtube), because they all challenge rigid and traditional machismo. This video is especially interesting because nudity is often tied to 'women' or the 'feminine', especially when it comes to war time (ala the centerfold, rape of women, creation of pockets of third world R n R - rest and recreation). In this video you have a dude dancing in his undies while being a military combatant (and I swear I saw a dude on dude kissing scene in there!) - not prolific but the image itself challenges dominant notions of masculinity.

Check it out: Ibi Dreams of Pavement (A Better Day)

And of course interpol, because I just fucking love this song (take you on a cruise). To be honest their new album "Our Love to Admire" isn't really doing it for me. I've listened to it a good 5-6 times and I still can't say that any single one song is memorable. :(

the non-review review of SICKO...

It was FABULOUS, seldom do I like movies.... more so now than ever, but this was FAB. I laughed really, really loudly and I cried with full blown tears three times, if not more....Don't get me wrong, this movie was NUANCED as well. I think it will open a lot of eyes and raise a lot of questions about hyper-capitalism and corporate interests.

IT WAS GOOD! GO WATCH IT! NOW!

And in case you were wondering - most DRs in Canada also live in million dollar homes and sadly we aren't all socialists. Hell, they even showed a conservative canadian wax poetic about Tommy Douglas (in case you don't know of him already - you'll learn), that's how much the average Canadian citizen cares about healthcare as an issue.

ETA: I realized I rushed to write this post last night, and I should add a few things. There are a few problems with Canadian Healthcare (NOT the 'longer wait times'):

1) In the past 5 years tuition for Drs has increased to about $10K/yr, so it's pretty much only accessible to rich people and it leaves those who aren't rich in a higher debt (but not to worry, the banks offer huge credit loans to potential Drs - cough, cough). When you consider most 'non-professional' programs only cost $4500K a year for tuition - $10k is A LOT of money.
2) Physiotherapy, Optometry and dentistry (all needed things) are not covered. BUT most dentists do offer a sliding scale for people who don't have health coverage from their empolyers. Students usually only have to pay 70% of their dentist's/prescription expense because you pay a small medical fee when you pay your tuition. In the past physio and optometry were covered, slowly the government has been chipping away and 'streamlining' our healthcare system - which is very scary. A visit to the physio costs roughly $80-100/hour. A visit to the opt costs roughly $100-160.
3) Drug and Glasses Prescriptions are not covered. This is especially troublesome when you factor in the working poor and the growing senior population...
4) To book a specialist can often take months. BUT they do prioritize patients, if you are very ill, you can get an appointment much faster.
5) Most lab testing is covered.

ETA2:
6) There is a shortage of Drs in Ontario
7) There are many Drs with foreign training credentials who aren't given the opportunities that "Canadian trained" Drs are given.
8) When foreign trained Drs are recertified they are the first to get placed in rural towns (they do get higher pay), where they may/may not have racialized communities and interactions (this becomes isolating for them).

But I swear I've never heard someone having to chose between which finger they wanted to save... But under American capitalism that makes sense. How cruel.

From a Canadian perspective, the timing of this movie couldn't be better our new conservative government is okay with privatization, AND the Ontario government has approved 6 new private healthcare facilities in this province...This is a deeply disturbing problem of course. We can't allow this to happen - and having a two-tierd healthcare system is not going to help anyone ... but of course .... the rich!

It was humane, intelligent, funny, touching and very-well done overall. I think many Americans will start questioning who feeds them commie myths and who tells them who their enemies are etc...

The one quip I had about it was that Moore had to refer to Hillary Clinton as 'sexy'. Why? Why do female politicians (or female anythings) have to be sexified?

Happy Canada Day - notes on Multiculturalism...

So, two days ago (oops I missed it!) was Canada Day. This blog is still primarily read by Americans... so, yes, Canada Day was on July the 1st. Which means our country celebrated 140yrs of colonial occupation nation-building on this land mass....

Long story short, I've always not really enjoyed the Canada Day Celebrations [putting aside my issues with the concepts of nationhood and states] much. Don't get me wrong, it's fun, I get to hang out with people I love, we usually manage to hang out and do lots of fun things... but...My disdain mostly arises from not being able to relate to why people like Bharat natyam and other 'traditional' folk dances so much on that day. I lived for a long time in the nation's capital and going to parliament hill to do this sort of thing got really tiring after the ..... first 20 minutes. I don't do classical indian dances, none of my relatives do either, in fact they aren't very popular in India either (from what I know) - with exception, kind of like how ballet works here.

Anyways, here is an excellent passage on the problematic nature of 'multi-culturalism' from a new book that I can't recommend highly enough "Discourses of Denial: Mediations of Race, Gender, and Violence" by Yasmin Jiwani (UBC Press - 2006). Go out and get this!!! It is a must read, it's not necessarily anything drastically new for people who are familiar with critical race studies, but Jiwani's book provides an amazing synthesis of current work and she uses contemporary examples to illustrate these ideas. Plus, she is a fabulous writer who doesn't hold back.

This passage I believe can aptly be used to describe the problematic nature of Canada day style multi-cultural festivals (she is referring more specifically to media representations and news coverage):

"Or, alternatively, their [POC] representation us used to show up the image of the dominant society as one of tolerance, meritocracy, and equality. Of course, this does not hold true for raced bodies that stereotypically appear most frequently in the music and sports sections of the newspaper. here, their success is often attributed to their innate predisposition toward these activities.

The novelty or dramatic criterion of news stories also coincides with the certain aspects of racialized minority cultures. Seen against a backdrop of White society, these groups offer colourful alternatives. Their fashion, music and cuisine become objects of attention in the coverage devoted to ethnic festivals and ceremonies. Conversely, cultural rites and rituals are given coverage when they are perceived and positioned as being antithetical to social norms. The persistent coverage of arranged marriages, circumcision rites, communal living arrangements, and different religious traditions contributes to images of racialized communities that cast them as being uncivilized, oppressive, and undesirable......these legacies are grounded in a legacy of colonialism and imperialism" (Jiwani 2006: 40)

Earlier in the book Jiwani has an amazing passage that explains why communities of colour often take-up these roles under multiculturalism and multicultural policies. I wish I could type out the two pages - but I will type up bits of it:

"Communities, then [in regards to race-based program funding by the government], become a focal point of the policies, despite the reality that these communities are, as Bannerji (2000) reminds us, not natural constructions but but social constructions mediated out of a necessity to respond to particular state policies. In turn, these communities are harnessed by these policies to better serve the status quo and thereby utilized to maintain a hierarchical racialized structure of power. Such communities are reified as embodiments of particular cultural formations even though what they may be representing is a graft of a culture, specific social classes within that cultural formation, and particular interpretations of cultural traditions. Patriarchal and economic elites maintain the boundaries of these so-called cultural communities, ensuring compliance and cohesion. However, as Bannerji remarks this is not only a top-down imposition but also a bottom-up response, based on the racism, exclusion, and hostility from the dominant society faced by these groups. Within the context of these communities, power is naturalized and rendered normal through the recuperation and reification of tradition.

Bannerji calls our attention to a key element of multiculturalism, namely, the connection between race and culture. Racialized communities are minoritized and interpreted as primordial cultural entities rather than as entities formed through state measures. Further, these cultural labels are not neutral but carry Orientalist and racially inscribed connotations of Western society that represents itself as progressive, emancipatory, and democratic. Racial differences become cultural differences, and race itself is culturalized. ....emphasis on culture evacuates concepts of race and racism, so that cultural tolerance comes to replace the need for racial tolerance....to tolerate is to 'put up with'.
" (Jiwani 2006: 13-14).

A final word on 'upper-class POC':

"Assimilation also offers, especially through class privilege, a greater degree of mobility. On the other hand, the deeply racialized nature of identity, both group and individual based, limits such latitude in the sense that no matter how rich or assimilated a person of colour is, where s/he can go is undoubtedly curtailed by elite structures of power....illusory promises of fitting in and belonging provided one buys into the trappings of so-called normalcy and normative behaviour - are just that - fictions - when they run headlong into the reality of race and racism...... In a hierarchy structured in dominance, the ideological labour involved is one of keeping each group "in its place." This includes racialized people of colour whose confinement at a particular level of the hierarchy ensures that those above can maintain their power and privilege." (Jiwani 2006: 28)

Happy Pride Toronto!

Sorry, I haven't been posting lately. I'm just living in the real world more often I guess. It's summer after all.

So to kick it off right, I went to the Dyke March today - and it was fun! There were so many women from "Dykes with Tikes" - way to go mommies!

Tomorrow is the Pride Parade and I"ll definitely be there too.

I want to write something more thoughtful about these events though. One really can't help but notice all the sponsorship from large corporations and namely banks, something does leave me restless about all this.

So here are some more 'radical' links regarding the recent corporatization of Toronto's "Pride".

Limp Fist (Toronto specific)
Gay Shame

I really have come to believe that all 'politics' have been co-opted by neoliberalism. Namely anything that came out of the early years 'identity politics' era... feminism of course included.

Case in point, Toronto has a 'gay radio station'.... This could be viewed as a great thing... but I have to wonder if a new Pakistani immigrant gay man is seriously listening to 24 hours of Gloria Estefan, Beyonce and disco anything.... And I wonder why they aren't playing more Queen (fronted of course by the very gay Freddy Mercury) or Judas Priest (fronted by Rob Halford). An argument could of course be made that they were both in the closet at the peak of their careers.

But I guess my problem lies more with how 'gayness' or the much touted term "pride" is defined, and on whose terms.... but I could be making something out of nothing.

I dunno, makes me wonder....

Help Yolanda & others get to the AMC!

Dear Friends,

As you know many WOC bloggers want to go to the AMC. Some of the bloggers have managed to get funds, I have posted the link in the sidebar to bfps blog which has the links to those bloggers that need funds. I believe Black Amazon is now covered (for the most part).

I'm just putting the word out for Yolanda as she asked me if there was some way I could make an announcement (she has been running around a lot lately). But you can still contribute to the other bloggers, which as I've mentioned, the link is in the side bar.

Here is the link to Yolanda's Paypal.

Thank you

You are too generous, no really....

A quick response to:

The Thinking Man's Guide to Bachelor Parties
Whom to invite, where to have it, and more.
By Troy Patterson

Article otherwise known as Trickle-down economics meets empowerment meets cooptation of feminism meets benevolent male consumer meets "the global south" meets white male privilege. Bah, nuff said.

Naturally, "the arts" include exotic dancing: The bachelor should be teased, humiliated, and possibly oil-wrestled by a professional ecdysiast. Some of you may object on feminist grounds, but strippers claim to find their work empowering, and this is no time for a debate. It is sufficiently progressive to treat the dancers with respect and to tip generously.

you SHOULD ALWAYS treat dancers with respect (was there a time where you weren't supposed to, I guess so cause it's now 'progressive'?)... but that's not your real point is it?

Adventuresome sorts might consider a trip overseas, or at least to Montreal, home of Club Super Sexe and its DJ, who brings the most charming Quebecois lilt to such phrases as "Lesbian show, lesbian show!" Amsterdam, Ixtapa, Reykjavik, and Cartegena have also become popular, but who can keep up with extradition treaties? Why not see America first? There's always New Orleans, a jaunt with a humanitarian vibe: The tragedy of Hurricane Katrina may have slipped from the front pages, but the ladies of Larry Flynt's Barely Legal Club still need your support.

Right, because how much of your money actually is going to support the women and not larry flynt.

What's so funny is that the only women who were really welcome back into new orleans during the initial devastation were the strippers, I remember reports detailing how uncomfortable female relief workers felt at that time, so much so that many of them returned.

And you care so much about the feminist cause, no?

I love the idea of 'trickle-down' economics, the whole problem with it is - nothing ever trickles down anywhere until you, the supposedly humanitarian-turned activist consumer, get something out of it. If you are a dude, that's most likely a good old blow-job.... This could of course be anywhere; in the American "global south", thailand, India, the eastern block, hey and now Iraq!

Cause you know, wherever tragedy hits - uncle sam and his henchman will always be there with a bucket ready to collect the sweat and tears of women and children everywhere! (you did say 'barely legal' right?).

PS. If you were really a 'thinking man', I would say - wouldn't you think to ask your fiance/SO what she thought of this? This is of course the wedding issue. Considering that it's women who do most of the wedding planning - maybe this was supposed to be a spot where you exert male entitlement to 'barely legal teens' and by killing two birds with one stone you get to tell women readers what they really ought to expect their future spouses are into. Cause you aren't really addressing a male audience. If you were I'd think that you'd think - that might be something a fiance might be offended by.... But that's an afterthought for the 'thinking man'.

Open call for submissions: "Leftist" Movie Reviews

It's really hard for me to keep track of who writes what, it seems everyday I want to add another 2-3 blogs to my blogroll.

I started "Leftist" movie reviews back in January, I would really like for it to be an aggregate of the best movie reviews in the blogosphere. The more contemporary the better!

I get a lot of hits here at LLL with the search terms "leftist movies", so I figure there are enough people interested in this.

National Hunger Awareness Day

I would write more - but I won't have a chance. Sign this quick online petition.

As most of you may know we have a conservative government in Canada now, and this of course means cuts to social spending.

From having volunteered at a food bank in the past - I could just quickly say the following:
1) All people of all ages, of all racial backgrounds go hungry daily, many of them are young children. Sometimes you'd see entire families coming into the food bank. In fact, if my memory serves me correctly 2/3 of the hungry in Canada are children.

2) Food banks are sad. When we used to sort the 'good' produce from the 'completely inedible'. Many of us middle-class kids would walk away with the heaviest heart. Because we knew what was 'good' was something we'd never have in our kitchen, something our parents wouldn't feed us. In fact, what was good produce at the food banks was often the stuff that we'd throw out in our own homes. The place where I volunteered even had rats in the produce. Food banks are underfunded places in general. In TO - there aren't many of them, the ones that exist, exist in a sad sorry state.

3) Mac n cheese - is not food, stop donating it. There's no nutrition - it's the equivalent of cardboard. Save some money to buy peanut butter and canned beans.

4) The long-term goal should not be to have more food banks - the goal should be to get rid of the need for food banks.

5) It's hard for women (I.e. this usually ends up being 'women's work') to get to the food bank. It really is, it's this trap between deciding whether you ought to use your $2.50 for the subway to get to the food bank in the dead of winter, get someone to watch the kids, or go to the foodbank - or straight up use the $2.50 to buy a carton of milk instead of getting much needed groceries from the foodbank. You're only allowed to 'take' so much food from the food bank as well. This is even tougher for new immigrant women who are rarely even familiar with the food bank or the city.

Sorry this is a little messy...

ETA: At Professor black woman's suggesetion, here is a list of most needed items. I'm guessing this is common amongst most food banks. Note: this food bank does state mac n cheese. At the foodbank I was at - this was a staple, but definitely other products were a necessity and most people tend not to donate them as much (hence my previous comments).

Women's housing takeover (ETA: SALCO)

Updated with info from Red Jenny, via WOC blog:

The women's housing takeover resulted in four arrests. This is really disturbing on so many levels. Read more here and here.

Check out WAPC's blog itself.

1) I saw some posters and also heard about this from a friend. It looks totally awesome, but unfortunately I have more trivial things to do today, so I can't go.

Do check this out, it is truly awesome, and I wish I was so there right now, this minute.

From their website:

Support this exciting work by women and trans people in Toronto to set up housing for those of us experiencing violence and our children.

Sunday, June 3rd, Noon

Rally: 12 noon at Cawthra Square, Toronto (North of 519 Church Street Community Centre)

March: 1:00 pm- Led by women, trans people and our kids

ALL ARE WELCOME

HOUSING BY WOMEN 4 WOMEN NOW

What is the Women’s Poverty Collective Women’s Housing Takeover?

The Women Against Poverty Collective (WAPC) is a group of women and trans people who have been meeting regularly since March 2006. We are working together to advocate for safe, affordable, and accessible housing for women experiencing violence. Poverty is one of the biggest concerns identified by women living with violence, and coupled with a lack of access to housing, it keeps women stuck in abusive situations.

Women living in poverty have repeatedly identified the important, but often unrecognized, links between poverty and women’s experiences of violence, asking for policy changes such as those that are being advocated for by the current Raise the Rates and the Ontario Needs a Raise Campaigns. The Women Against Poverty Collective is organizing in solidarity with the Step It Up! Campaign, a broadly based effort that aims to address the link between poverty and gendered violence, organized by Ontario’s women’s equality-seeking groups, shelters, rape crisis centres, unions, anti-poverty groups, and community groups.

2) Quick online action - to support SALCO (South Asian Legal Clinic of Ontario):

Please take two whole seconds to fill out this letter to the Ontario Provincial Parliament:

Their funding hasn't been renewed and they may end up closing.

From their site:

ACCESS TO JUSTICE!
Funding for the South Asian Legal Clinic of Ontario (SALCO) from Legal Aid Ontario comes to an end in September 2007. After September 2007, the fastest growing community in the GTA – the South Asian community – will be denied access to legal services that are affordable and that meet the community’s needs in a linguistically and culturally sensitive manner. The Ontario Government and Legal Aid Ontario refuse to make a commitment to our community in the shape of a fully funded and permanent legal clinic. While the Government and Legal Aid Ontario rightly made such commitments to Aboriginal, Francophone, African Canadian, Chinese and Spanish-speaking Ontarians, they have not extended the same right to South Asian Ontarians.

Sorry, this post is so short, I'm very busy lately.

Happy Belated Birthday Morrissey.... May 22, 2007

I wouldn't normally do this type of thing...but...

I don't think anyone has ever made celibacy look so fucking cool and at the sametime made it seem so much more like a 'rational choice' vs. a religious imposition.

So this is for one of rock's original 'queer' dudes - Happy Birthday Morrissey!

Of course a lot more can be said about 'rationality' and Morrissey, maybe his scary vegetarian politics? maybe his contempt for the monarchy? maybe his constant existential angst (when does one outgrow that, if ever)? - and lastly his possible dislike of people like me (i.e 'pakis')?

Either way, this man rocks.

Morrissey on Meat:

My favorite Morrissey song (excluding years with the Smiths):

You know, while rewatching this video I couldn't help appreciate it a little more than I have in the past. It's nice for once to see a girl play the role of the existentially angst-ridden, disaffected, tragic hero. I.e. in which we assume she is both intelligent and worthy of our empathy due to her implied feelings of dissociation from everyday living. Women/girls aren't usually afforded that luxury in pop/rock songs - especially in the present state of crapptacular music and music videos. And is it just me, or is there a little more in that 'wave' to the female store-clerk?

However, interestingly this video while good in it's attempt, inadvertenty reifies gender binaries too because it's almost as if the girl herself seems to take on a 'masculine' role in contrast to the other women around her. I.e. the other women around her end up being 'chatty and vapid' stereotypical feminine cliches, while her tragic hero status exists more so due to her being able to identify with Morrissey (and her clothing). Obviously debatable.

Just musing...

Enjoy!

Cultural Fetishism, Neoliberalism, "sex positivity" and appropriation

Cultural appropriation - is something that is done daily primarily to sell things originating in "third-world" countries for the psycho-social-entertainment of Western audiences. It centres around de-contextualized and ahistorical readings of other cultures for mainly profit incentives. But how is this perpetuated by the "sex industry"? How is this often (not always) supported by "sex radical activists" and academics?

This excerpt is from an article at feministing.com about a new book called "Sacred Sex for the Twenty-first century" (sounds just like the last century to me!):

Tantra was once a supremely revolutionary practice. Tantra in India in its early days probably looked something like the social revolution in America in the 1960s: experimentation with sex and drugs, group ecstatic rituals with music, dancing and sex, loving whomever you chose regardless of race or background, and questioning the moral, ethical, and philosophical precepts of the day. In the twentieth century, Tantra was reintroduced in the West by a few brave sex, gender, spiritual, and political radicals who ventured to India in search of an active spirituality that would embrace and empower everyone in all aspects of life, including the sexual and political. The practice of Tantra today can once again be revolutionary in the face of the current cultural rise of fundamentalist sex and gender politics.

notice the probably? That's a pretty big assumption, cause you know - most of what happened in the 60s in India was often perpetuated by money grubbing upper caste pseudo-gurus to get western ppl's money. Kind of like 'spiritual tourism' - and anyone with even a basic understanding of third world politics of tourism will understand the problematic dynamics there in. In case you don't - here's a lurvly article. Also the 'experimentation' that the author assumes is 'so common' - was not common. It was isolated to very few upper class indians who had money. Such freedoms were not part of the lived experiences of many. So like anything that's about 'cultural appropriation' - it is again white people who define the creativity, the assumption of what was going on 'over there'. I.e. other cultures & other people are generally are only good to white-noeliberalism and commodification (or white politics) as long as they fortify what is being said by the white person/cultural creator at hand. The context/history is lost, and what's sold is 'culture'.

Notice the usage of the word bravery??? And how the people who bravely introduced this were pretty much like past 'pioneers' i.e. colonists. Not really a new dynamic here. Yeah, white ppl looking for a few fuck-ons in brown countries...nothing new here either, the US military has done that in every country they've ever invaded anyways. That's not really 'brave', it's about american entitlement and having mula and lots of it.

It's really interesting because in the previous paragraph, the author mentions the following:

Other people are turned off by the idea of Tantra and Tantric sex because of its image in America as couples therapy for white, middle-aged, middle-class, apolitical, woo-woo, New Age, sarong-wearing workshop junkies. In fact, Tantra is practiced in a wide variety of styles by a wide variety of people, including some of my friends who are young, leather-clad, gender-fucked anarchists who are into BDSM. Tantra embraces all genders, sexual styes and sexual preferences. It is primarily concerned with inner mystical experiences, not relationships and wardrobe.

So though she pays lip-service to 'white middle aged middle class people", which is super-funny because that only absolves her from her own whiteness/white guilt while trying to sell it to another group of white people which is indicated in "other people are turned off".

It's like for chrissakes, do I give a shit if the person next to me is called a 'hippie' or a 'granola'?... same shit, different neoliberal label. I don't care. Only white people are 'individuals' anyways, and from her interview that shines through repetitively.

Whatever, this is not new - and happens ALL the time, for something more local, read here. This was a fiasco that took place about two years ago. It resulted in a massive letter writing campaign by many south asian organizations.

Does Fashion Care about Racism?

"During the featured entertainment, I saw lots of white people with cowboy hats and tattoos with brown powder on their faces and bodies. After Black people have fought long and hard on the racist use of “black face"? in entertainment, I felt disheartened that in 2005, few lessons have been learned."

I will say this though, this is just Pt.1 of cultural appropriation of sexuality and the promotion of it often by white-upper-middle class academic sex positive theorists/white activists/cultural producers etc.... It's interesting because no one seems to be touching upon this element in academia, even though grassroots south asian activists here in Toronto have already drawn attention to the matter themselves. Namely in regards to their marginalization in both the LGBTTTIQ community and the non-profit industrial complex.

Comments closed, I just can't do it right now.

ETA: I removed the previous remark because it was awkward.

Temporary e-hiatus

I wanted to post something longer considering I've now had over 15,000 visitors over the past few months. But unfortunately that won't be happening at the moment.

I really have appreciated all the knowledge, comments, interactions that I have had over the past few months with people. But I find this a little too difficult to do at times. I'm still not in the right blogging frame of mind.

Enjoy some nice tunes in the meantime, thank you. {I think the songs are mostly user videos, with the exception of the Bright Eyes one).

Yuckers ... Why Daniel Edwards is a D.O.W.G...

A D.O.W.G is an invention of yours truly - i.e. a Dirty Old White Guy.

Don't know who Edwards is? Well, he's the same anti-abortion dude who brought us the elaborate statue of Britney Spears' giving birth on a rug or something.

Edwards is out moralizing to 'young women' again! This time he's brought out another famous 'celubu-slut', Paris Hilton, to 'honor' with one of his craptacular statues.

And guess what it's called? Okay, don't bother guessing - it's called "Autopsy".

So, Edwards as you are so concerned about drunk driving - will you please explain to me why the middle-aged drunken white dude who hit someone I care about, with his friggin VAN this past year - is out enjoying a great time - while this person has been in chronic fucking pain forever????

Well, the thing is - you aren't concerned about drunk driving really.... You are more concerned about the chaotic moral state of young women these days. What are we going to do with all these 'girls gone wild?' huh? slut-shaming - who knew it was an art form.

If they aint bearing offspring then - we've got to show them a true role model who does bear offspring at a young age. What a 'good mother' she even sacrificed her career for a few years - while staying with a loser husband to bear (yes, you chose a 'bear skin-rug' symbolically didn't you? How clever - not!) HIS KIDS. Well, that's what you assumed - right?

And now this time - you are at it again - teaching young women how not to be stupid drunken sluts right? So you CARVE (yes, carve) up a statue of Paris Hilton's autopsy. Ooooh how fucking edgy. Yawn.

"Campaign to Rescue Women of Youth" featuring "The Paris Hilton Autopsy" offers a cadaveric nude Paris Hilton, laid out with twisted body and opened abdominal cavity on a coroner's table, while her cell phone remains in her grip. The 'unglamorous' display which includes support material from anti-drunk driving organizations counters "the disturbingly glamorized trend of Hollywood's 'girls gone wild'," according to gallery director, David Kesting.

Maybe next time you might want to look at actual drunk driving conviction rates rather than acting all fucking preachy - moron.

That is why - I bestow upon you the prestigious D.O.W.G award. I hate most male artists...

Thank goodness for the Guerilla Girls. *gushes*
