Shocked? I'm not - really. Before we jump to the conclusion that I'm anti-science - repeat after me: Race is a construct, it's fluid and there is no scientific proof of the existence of intellectual advantage favouring one 'group' of people over another. Racism masked as science - is still racism - and that's always devoid of fact.
The newspaper quoted the 79-year-old American geneticist as saying he was "inherently gloomy about the prospect of Africa" because "all our social policies are based on the fact that their intelligence is the same as ours — whereas all the testing says not really."
What does shock me though is that 99% of the world's population fails to see the connect between the current 'third-world' and past colonial expansion/exploitation.
How is it that people don't see - that the so-called 'equality-scale' - started off unbalanced in the first place? How do people not get this? How do people not see that when you steal/rape/exploit/murder/mutilate/severly destroy a society there is no hope in hell that they will ever be able to 'stand up' on their feet in the first place. (Putting aside that the development "MODEL" is flawed itself).
What do people not get about this?

his age doesn't have anything to do with his racism. Plenty of old folks are around who would kick the pants off of any of us younger 'slacktivists'.... tis true!
I think it's easy for the media and public to blame his age (they mention he's 79) on his racism. It's a cheap tactic that allows them to cleanly avoid taking responsibility over NOT covering race issues, like that of Jena 6 (that you reported about many a time on our blog).
I.e. by claiming racism is of the past, makes it an easier pill to swallow. It dulls the edge off it, and helps us not to acknowledge systemic and overt forms of it today....

Of course the tests "prove" that Africans are "not as smart." The tests are biased toward upper-middle-class and wealthy people from "Western" countries, raised in a European or European-inspired cultural tradition.
I hate that argument so much.
I also hate that this guy and his partner are considered the pioneers of DNA research when Rosalind Franklin did more work than both of them (or so it's believed) and got no credit.
