Why strippercise and pole dancing are only for thin, white chicks with hawt bods!

Oh damn it all to hell... so here's a video of some 'fat' women 'getting down', basically the perfect market for strippercising and pole dancing! Right? I mean, seriously now, IDEAL TARGET MARKET, fat women who should want to look hawt.

I mean, seriously for the last 5-6 years or so 1) strippercising and sexy-fun exercising have been all the rage, read here and here 2) these things are marketed as harmless non-sexualized fun, fun 3) obesity is a super health crisis

So considering all of the above, then why is the ideal target market for strippercise and pole dancing recieving so much criticism?[make sure to read this link]

Everyone should be commending them in their desire to want to look hot and actually be proactive about losing their excess weight, right?

I thought that video was awesome, a group of women having fun and dancing like they enjoyed it. Big difference from ‘performing’ whatever happened to women’s “free spirit?” I think we know the answer.

See there is logic to this - and it's quite a threatening logic.

This is the logic IMO: Women do not own their sexuality, therefore when fat women assert themselves to own their sexuality (i.e. by showing they can be 'sexy' and have REAL 'fun') they are hated for it. Because at the end of the day - if sexual behaviour isn't performed for 1)Male pleasure 2) under male conditions 3) by women who are aware that men are watching them then well, 'then the fat bitches just ought to know better'.

Yes, i agree, awesome vid! It's the playfulness we were talking about sparkle, over at your blog.

To me this only proves that stripping and pole-dancing CAN NOT be removed from sexual objectification of women. Because it's so inherently about objectification, and when women do do it for the supposedly 'intended' purpose of exercise and FUN, it is scrutinized in the worst possible light (as indicated by the responses to this video).

On a similar note surrounding ‘topless’ sunbathing in some European country a few years ago. Some local counsel official proposed that no woman over (I think aged 60) should be ‘allowed’ to go topless!
Here again as you say, “Women do not own their sexuality” therefore age, body size and male’s interpretation of what is hawt yadda become the measuring stick. It really makes me want to puke. I really cannot see how stripping and pole dancing can be removed from sexual objectification of women. Whatever we do is judged on the sexayyy factor and the responses to that vid say it all.

Wow sparkle - did the bill for the topless bathing actually go through? Unbelievable, our bodies are only acceptable when they are pleasing to men. It's really wicked.

Oh no, he was shouted down! It was only a proposal from a local councillor, but it was enough to hit the headlines here. I think they were maybe 'testing the water' for *babe* only beaches. You know leave your porn at home and get a real life event going on down by the sea. Wall to wall male defined beauty 24/7

I don't know - I will never understand how you can constantly be obsessed over "ONE SINGLE BODY TYPE" 24/7?

It's just proof that it has nothing to do with 'women's actual bodies' but rather the domination of a women's personhood. Basically, if one body type is the model for general heterosexual male entertainment - than one porn star would be enough to suffice this 'entertainment'. But that's not the case, it's the same body type but different women again and again. It's funny because that's always the case when they show 'twin lesbian porn'... two-nth number of women who look identical in every single way.

It's about being able to dominate all women's personhood - not just to oggle at women.

I can only envision these beaches with plastic barbie-esque women.

I've been taking pole dancing classes since June. The majority of the women who take classes at the studio I go to are in their mid to late 30s (ages of students range from 21 - 60), are of average or "full-figured" body type, and comprise a variety of races - white, black, Indian, Asian, Hispanic (and probably more, but those are just the ones I've seen). There are 4 instructors - two are black, two are white. Two are in their early 30s, one is in her late 30s, one is in her mid 20s.

Amber, I won't debate you here - because this discussion's actually already taken place at Sparkle's blog: http://sparklematrix.wordpress.com/2006/08/21/international-pole-dancing-day/

The bottom line for me is - why now? Why women? Why make it mainstream? And I guess I'll always take the most radical answer over the simplest explaination of "It's just fun and harmless"....

But I guess that's why I'm a little looney ;)
